Tuesday July 9th marks the arrival of Five Hole for Food‘s annual cross-country ball hockey tour. As always, the hitch is to collect non-perishable food donations for Moisson Montreal. Last year saw 133,000lbs of food collected, and organizers are looking to top that by a significant margin this year. Montreal is a key piece to that puzzle, and we need to step up, big time. We always tend to think of Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas as times to donate to food banks, but the sad reality is that during the summer is when banks are critically low on food. Five Hole for Food has done a lot to help alleviate those needs, but there are always hungry mouths to feed and there is always room to do more for the less fortunate. And if you can help out while playing hockey? It doesn’t get better, does it?
Please show up to Place du Canada on July 9th from 4-7pm, and bring your non-perishable food items with you. Be honest, you know you’ve got at least a few cans of beans kicking around in your pantry that you bought in January that you’ll never use. If you’re feeling particularly energetic that day, bring your hockey stick along. All ages, skill levels, genders and even Bruins fans are invited. If you work downtown, Place du Canada is a very central location; you probably walk right by it as you head over to the office.
Last year saw several Habs alumni like Sergio Momesso, and Gilbert Delorme come out to play. Owner Geoff Molson also played virtually all afternoon, and Rejean Houle was there to smile and shake hands. Who will be there this year? Only time will tell, but charity founder Richard Loat has promised that some sporting celebrities will show up to play.
We hope that you’ll show up, too.
